He entered the Guinness Book of Records twice for music — and once for something bigger: more charities supported than any entertainer in history.

The Guinness Book of Records lists Michael Jackson for 39 charitable organizations supported — more than any other star of his era. But the number undersells the pattern: for most of his career, giving was something he did constantly and quietly, usually with explicit instructions that no press be told.

The Heal the World Foundation

Founded in 1992 and powered by the Dangerous World Tour, the foundation airlifted 46 tons of supplies to Sarajevo during the siege, funded children's immunization drives, and paid for medical treatments city after city along the tour route. In Budapest he met a four-year-old boy named Béla Farkas who needed a liver transplant his family could never afford; Michael paid for the operation. Béla lived.

The pattern of a lifetime

In 1984, badly burned during a commercial shoot, he gave every dollar of the settlement to the hospital that treated him; its burn center carried his name for decades. When Ryan White, a teenager shunned for having AIDS, needed a friend, Michael gave him Neverland weekends and a red Mustang — and a song on the Dangerous album after Ryan died. The gates of Neverland itself opened regularly for busloads of guests who had spent too much of their lives in hospital wards.
